AI Traffic Attribution

Every day, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity send visitors to your website. Google Analytics marks most of them as “direct” or “(not set)” because it doesn't recognize AI referrer patterns. You're flying blind on one of the fastest-growing traffic sources on the web.

BetterMeter identifies exactly which AI platform sent each visitor, including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, Copilot, and more. Zero configuration required. Add one script tag and see the full picture in minutes.

How it works

01

Referrer parsing

Every incoming visit is inspected at the HTTP level. BetterMeter reads the Referer header and URL query parameters (like Google's sca_esv=ai parameter) to determine the traffic source.

02

AI platform detection

The referrer is matched against a continuously updated database of AI platform signatures. This covers direct referrals (e.g. chatgpt.com), embedded browser clicks, and platform-specific URL parameters that other analytics tools don't track.

03

Dashboard display

AI traffic appears in a dedicated dashboard with platform-by-platform breakdowns, trend lines, top landing pages, and comparisons to organic and direct traffic. No custom reports or filters needed.

Supported AI platforms

BetterMeter detects traffic from every major AI assistant and search platform. New platforms are added as they emerge.

What you can measure

  • 01Total AI-referred visitors and their share of your overall traffic
  • 02Platform-by-platform breakdown: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity vs Gemini
  • 03Which pages on your site receive the most AI-referred traffic
  • 04AI traffic trends over time, including daily, weekly, and monthly growth rates
  • 05Engagement comparison: how AI visitors behave compared to organic search visitors

What traditional analytics miss

Google Analytics, Matomo, and most traditional analytics platforms rely on a static referrer database built for the pre-AI web. When a visitor clicks a link inside ChatGPT, the referrer header contains chatgpt.com , a domain that GA4 doesn't have in its channel definitions. The result: your AI traffic gets bucketed into “Direct” or “Unassigned”.

The problem compounds with platforms like Google AI Overviews, which use the same google.com domain as organic search. Without inspecting the sca_esv parameter, it's impossible to distinguish an AI Overview click from a regular search result. GA4 doesn't make that distinction.

BetterMeter solves this with a dedicated AI referrer database that is continuously updated as platforms launch and change their referrer patterns. You get accurate attribution without manual UTM tagging or custom channel groups.

Who this is for

Content sites and publishers

Understand how AI assistants surface your content. See which articles get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, track growth in AI-referred readership, and measure the real reach of your content beyond traditional search.

SaaS companies

Track AI-driven signups and conversions. When a developer asks ChatGPT for a tool recommendation and clicks through to your site, know exactly where that lead came from instead of losing it in “direct” traffic.

E-commerce

Measure AI-driven product discovery. As shoppers increasingly ask AI assistants for product recommendations, understand which platforms drive the most product page visits and how AI traffic converts compared to other channels.

Frequently asked questions

How does BetterMeter detect AI traffic?

BetterMeter parses the HTTP referrer header and URL parameters of every visit against a comprehensive database of AI platform patterns. This includes ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, and Copilot referrer signatures. Detection happens automatically with zero configuration.

Why does Google Analytics miss AI traffic?

Most AI platforms set referrer headers that GA4 doesn't recognize. ChatGPT traffic typically shows as 'direct' or '(not set)' because GA4's referrer database hasn't been updated for AI platforms. BetterMeter maintains a dedicated AI referrer database that is continuously updated.

Do I need to configure anything for AI detection?

No. AI traffic attribution works automatically as soon as you add the BetterMeter script tag. No configuration, no filters, no custom dimensions required.

Which AI platforms does BetterMeter detect?

ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Perplexity AI, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, You.com, and Phind. New platforms are added as they emerge.

Can I see AI traffic trends over time?

Yes. The AI Traffic dashboard shows daily, weekly, and monthly trends for each platform. You can see growth rates, compare platforms, and identify which pages receive the most AI referrals.
