BetterMeter vs Plausible Analytics

The privacy benchmark: simple, cookie-free, EU-hosted, open source.

Plausible is the reference point for privacy-first web analytics, and BetterMeter follows it deliberately: no cookies, no browser storage, no personal data in the default configuration. If your product is a website and your question is how many people read it, Plausible answers that well and we will not pretend otherwise.

The difference is scope. Plausible measures websites. BetterMeter measures websites, CLI tools, MCP servers and API endpoints through one pipeline, and treats AI traffic as two separate questions: which assistants send you visitors, and which crawlers read your pages.

Plausible added an AI Assistants channel in 2026 that groups ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity referrals. That covers the click-through half. It does not cover the crawler half, and neither product can see traffic that arrives with no referrer at all.

Where Plausible Analytics wins

Reasons to choose them instead

  • You can self-host it. BetterMeter has no self-hosted edition, and for a lot of privacy-led buyers that is the whole argument.
  • Data stays in the EU. BetterMeter runs in the United States only.
  • It is a known, trusted brand with years of track record. We are new.
  • For a plain website with plain questions, it is simpler, and simpler is a feature.
Where BetterMeter wins

What they do not measure

  • CLI, MCP and API traffic are first-class event sources, not something you approximate with custom events.
  • Crawlers are reported, not discarded: you can see what GPTBot and ClaudeBot actually read.
  • Meta ad spend joins to HubSpot deals on click IDs, so you can follow a campaign through to revenue.
  • Every report is reachable from a CLI and from MCP tools, so an assistant can answer questions against your data.

Which one should you use?

Pick Plausible if you want a proven, self-hostable, EU-hosted web analytics tool and your product is a website. Pick BetterMeter if you also ship a CLI, an MCP server or an API, or if you need crawler-level detail and ad-to-revenue attribution alongside your pageviews.

Questions people actually ask

Is BetterMeter as privacy-friendly as Plausible?
In its default configuration, yes: no cookies, no browser storage, IP addresses hashed with a rotating HMAC secret, and URLs stored without query strings. The difference is that BetterMeter also offers identity, fingerprinting and durable ad-click attribution as features you switch on deliberately. Plausible does not offer them at all. If your requirement is that those capabilities cannot exist in the product, Plausible is the stricter choice.
Can I self-host BetterMeter like Plausible?
No. BetterMeter is a hosted service and there is no open-source or self-hosted edition today. If self-hosting is a requirement, Plausible, Matomo and Umami all offer one and BetterMeter does not.
Does Plausible track AI traffic?
It tracks AI referrals. Plausible's AI Assistants channel groups visits that arrive with a ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity referrer, with the same engagement and goal reporting as any other channel. What it does not report is crawler activity, which is the other half of AI traffic: which AI crawlers requested which pages, how often, and how much bandwidth they consumed.
