BetterMeter vs Matomo

The full classic analytics suite, self-hosted first, with 20 years behind it.

Matomo is the most complete classic web analytics package you can run on your own servers. Heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing, a tag manager, funnels and full data ownership, with two decades of history and a strong position in regulated industries.

It is also the heaviest thing on this page to operate. A self-hosted Matomo is a PHP application, a database, and an ongoing job for somebody. The cloud edition removes that but prices on hits, which climbs fast on event-heavy sites.

BetterMeter is narrower and newer, and it makes no attempt at heatmaps or recordings. What it adds is the part of the internet Matomo predates: AI assistants sending traffic, AI crawlers reading pages, and analytics for CLI tools, MCP servers and APIs.

Where Matomo wins

Reasons to choose them instead

  • Heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing and a tag manager. BetterMeter has none of them.
  • Self-hosting with complete data ownership, which BetterMeter does not offer.
  • Twenty years of track record and a deep compliance story for regulated industries.
  • An EU cloud region, where BetterMeter is US-only.
Where BetterMeter wins

What they do not measure

  • AI assistant referrals and AI crawler activity are named reports rather than segments you build.
  • CLI, MCP and API traffic are first-class event sources.
  • Anonymous by default rather than cookies-unless-configured.
  • A hosted product with nothing to operate, and every report reachable from a CLI and MCP tools.

Which one should you use?

Pick Matomo if you need heatmaps, recordings or on-premise data ownership, or if a compliance regime effectively requires self-hosting. Pick BetterMeter if you want AI-era coverage and developer-tool telemetry with nothing to run, and can live without the classic optimisation toolkit.

Questions people actually ask

Does BetterMeter have heatmaps or session recording?
No. Both would require capturing far more of what a visitor does on the page than BetterMeter's anonymous-by-default model collects, and neither is planned. If they matter to you, Matomo and PostHog both have them.
Is Matomo harder to run than BetterMeter?
Self-hosted, yes, materially: it is a PHP application with a database, plugins and upgrades that somebody owns. Matomo Cloud removes that operational burden but bills on hits, which grows quickly on an event-heavy site. BetterMeter is hosted only, so there is nothing to operate either way.
